Why yes, I am an activist for all major issues! I am sort of opinionated about how people are trying to solving the world hunger problem - especially after looking at it from an anthropological standpoint. Sarah had sound logic! But no Arby's in Ethiopia? Whayayayayat???
From an anthropological perspective- you don't see wide spread hunger and starvation until a civilization achieves agriculture. Achieving this seems to correlate very closely with when you begin to see massive numbers of people starving and dieing of hunger.
The problem in Africa is that there are now rules limiting hunting- that doesn't just mean that outside poachers can't come in and hunt the giraffes- it means that the gatherer/hunter cultures that have thrived there are no longer allowed to hunt meat that they need to survive as they have for thousands of years.
As far as selling the Vatican goes- meh...you can only sell it once, and the problems are not going to go away. We will most likely see the human population of our planet double in the next few decades, and the food supply that is already strained is not going to simply get better just because the Catholic Church sells the Vatican.
I say we sell the Pentagon and the some 800 military bases we have all over the world.
That would free up 56% of our national budget right there. That would feed a lot of people, and we could even have free healthcare too.
We could shut down the bases and end the military, but we would all be Chines's, and we've seen how they treat there hungry. You could forget health care to. The Military is the largest provider of jobs in the country. For every person in the militrary there is three privite citizens backing them up. You lose all those tax paying jobs no free (its not free) health care, and your talking deep, long depression.
I am sure that the Ethiopians can do without an Arbys but the United States cannot do without its military. We might not be Chinese if we give up our militaty, we might be Iranian or under the control of the Taliban. Take it from this woman the only thing I am really willing for my hard-earned money going to the government for is to pay for the military. Perhaps the governemnt should concentrate on running the military and leave the rest up to us!!! I know I can put that third or so of my paycheck to better use than they have!!!
We do need some military, but not an empires worth. We all know what happens to empires when they spend too much on their military.
And all China has to do is foreclose on all the trillions of dept the US govt owes them, they pretty much already own us.
Oh ya, where did most of this dept come from, hmmm . . . the Industrial Military Complex and it's continuous wars perhaps?
I'm thinking more the War on Poverty and all its successors. Billions and billions spent and what do I hear everyday on the radio? We need to spend billions and billions more!!! At least in a military war there comes a point wher one can declare victory. This war on poverty will never end, even though we have 300 pound poor people. Maybe Ethopia needs that Arby's afterall.
One more thing, if one studies empires and how they collapse you might actually find that they did not spend enough on the military. Do you think that Rome would have fallen to the nomdic Goths if they had better organized their military? In fact I think that a case could be made that as empires collapse you see to much attention to the self and not enough atention to the greater good of the country, namely survival. If Rome had cut the spending on Bread and Circuses and built up its military History would be very different. The Soviet Union is another example. Beacause their economy was so weak they could not keep up with US military spending. Once this weakness was exposed (thanks in tiny part to Gorby opening a tiny part of the market) their empire collapsed. Peace through strengh.
The United States has taken the age old adage that "might makes right" to a whole new level.
When one takes an objective look back at our actions globally the amazing thing is that we don't have 9-11's monthly. Just as the Romans were savaged by the people in the eastern empire and Germanic tribes of the western empire that they had brutalized over the centuries, the one thing that is certain is that history tends to repeat itself. The U.S. has a long list of moral debt. that it has incurred and the bill is coming due.
I think one of the biggest problems we have is that we have bought into our own hype.
