Well, I got through my first semester as a band director. Everything has been awesome and I am really starting to enjoy this job (as hard as it can be sometimes). Bucket List for the next decade

Here's my bucket list for the next decade, in no particular order. Does that mean it's not a bucket list? Hopefully most of these will happen within the next few years! I'm curious as to what is on everyone else's bucket list?

1. Travel to every national park (this one is more of a lifetime goal)

2. Travel to Europe again.

3. Travel to Asia (Japan, Taiwan, Thailand)

4. Have a job that I love (hopefully that will start next or this summer!)

5. Build an environmentally conscious home surrounded by nature - in the mountains, next to a river, or somewhere else beautiful

6. Get out of Springfield for awhile and have an adventure

7. Live/work somewhere where it's feasible to sell my car and bike everywhere

8. Get my master's degree (I'm starting my MLS this Spring!)

9. Have one more baby

10. Go to the Harry Potter theme park and buy a wand! (might happen this summer!)

I had wanted to do this before Halloween so I bought the voice recorder and movie making software cause I didn't like Windows Live Movie maker, it didn't have a lot of the effects that I wanted. So after I bought and installed all of the software I got sick and lost my voice. I wasn't sick enough to miss work, but I couldn't go two minutes with out coughing and sniffling. Took me over a week to get most of my voice back and when I finally did there was an update for Windows live in my computer. After I downloaded it I found out it included one for the movie maker, and most of the apps I wanted where included in the update, so I wasted $50 on the Movie Maker software I had bought and couldn't get it back since I had opened it already.

Oh well, I managed to make the movie anyways and am now using you as a test audience. Be as cruel as you want, I can take it. I wanted to use some music in it but I couldn't find what I wanted. Maybe Riley can use his new Music Studio 1.2 to make some for me. I'm not to found of the voice in the narration, but I did five different versions and that was the most understandable. I'm going to try and do a new one but this will do for now. I was also thinking of doing a few shots of me sitting down and telling the story. Just let me know what you think.

More Halloween!

We celebrated Mason's first Halloween by dressing up as the Potter family. Mason was baby Harry, and Mykl and I were James and Lily Potter. We went "trick-or-treating" (Mykl and I ate all of the candy for Mason this year) by visiting grandparents and Aunts and Uncles houses. We were Riley and Dee Dee's first trick or treaters at their new house, so I'm pretty sure we win something. Leftover candy perhaps? Sorry we couldn't come to Lawrence or Ohio! Next year Mason may be a borg or Mario!

Happy barfday Milkman!

Mykl is 26 today...and apparently very angry about wearing barfday hats. I think he is already loving his barfday geek offerings this year - including "Earth: The book" (Jon Stewart), an Enterprise pizza cutter, a hard back copy of the fifth "Wheel of Time" book, a copy of the newest Wheel of Time book (pre-ordered) and Jurassic Park poster. Excellent. (said like Mr. Burns.)

No Idea

I was recently in Perryville Ky trying out my new camera. It has this panorama setting where it combines up to 10 pictures to give you a "panoramic view" of the surrounding area. I did most of mine with three pictures and only did one with ten. It's not perfect but I think it turned out okay. The three picture ones turned out the best. I wish I had this a Gettysburg this summer, now I'm going to have to go back next year. Sorry Wilson's Creek, maybe. Of course if it doesn't show up I'll quickly delete this post and you'll never know about it.

Ghost of Gettysburg

Sorry, I'm going to take up a few post here, but no one else is blogging right now so I don't think it really matters. Well, as you all don't care about the Ohio Jacobs went to Gettysburg this August. As usual we went ghost hunting, I took about 500 picutes, and had lots with orbs in them, but only one really good one. If you follow me on Facebook you might have already seen this, but why not put it on this blog too.

I see a figure of someone standing next to the bush in the field. Looks like his arms are crossed, and I can see he is wearing suspenders. Here is a closer look.

Could be nothing, I'm open to that. Also the Discovery Channel is airing a show about a ghost hunt in the Jennie Wade house. It should be on October 19th.

I was also making a video of our night walk of Picket's Charge, and recorded my taking the photos you just saw. Janice blocks the shot of the good pic, but you see the field and the bush that it was next to just seconds after. As you will see nothing is in the grass just a second after I took it. I apologize for the poor language, and stupid conversation we where having. I actually got 17 minutes of us in the field. We say some stupid #@$# on our ghost hunt. After I say "Hi Johnny" I take the pic with the figure in it.

September is now here, where has this summer gone. It was a good summer, went to Gettysburg, to Alum Creek, to the Air Museum in Dayton, the Gen. Meade seminar in Chambersburg, and grew a good garden. I got 31 jars of canned tomatoes this year, up from 15 last year, along with fresh peppers and carrots. Also got a new computer, a Gateway DX4300-15e. It has a AMD Phenom II X4 quad-core processor, 8 GB DDR2, and 1 TB Hard Drive. It was a step down from the newer one they have out, but the only difference was the newer one had a Blue Ray player in it. Plus this one was over $300 less. I also got a 23inch flat screen monitor. My old laptop couldn't run any of the new film and picture editing software I wanted. I haven't tried the new video editing yet, but look at what the picture one did to one of my old photos. This is of the Sunken Road from the Antietam Visitors Center.

Happy 51rst

Took Lord Paul of Herbert to Alum Creek for a year late 50th birthday party. Last year was just to cold to go to the lake. Water temp never got above 70. I rode the V twice and fell off twice. Dad drove me and the old dad who use to drive us around bridge poles at WOT came out of retirement. Abbey rode the V, and Dennis loved riding in the boat. A special note goes out to Mer, who worked great even though he hadn't run in two years. It is also his tenth year with us, so I have now anointed him Sir Mer of Cury. On a sad note, I had to throw the V away. We inflated it the night before we left and in the morning it was half out of air. We blew it up again before we left and had to re inflate before every trip. I'll have to find something else to replace it.

Hey everyone! Mason Ceth Bernskoetter joined us Monday Afternoon at St. Johns. He was born at 1:02 pm and weighed 8.2 lbs and has the wing span of an unladen african swallow. I've been busy taking pictures and wanted to share them with all of you. Some of you have not yet appeared to pay tribute, but I'm sure that when he rises to power he will forgive such transgressions.

Seriously though, he is amazing and thank you to everyone for your support (and food!!)

One Year Away

Here Comes Trouble

Hi'ya. Below is a new little ditty I made a few weeks ago when I was bored. I've had a fun-filled summer of wearing my music composer hat: writing another band show (from scratch!), writing music for Kelroy's game, mixing music for the KHS cheerleaders, and silly little side-projects like the one I posted.

Also, Deedles and I have furthered our long-term planning to start a music production side-business. I am proud to say we've reached a signifigant milestone that makes the business official -- BUSINESS CARDS!!! *jumps and freezes mid-air for a while* Yup, now I have stylish paper squares with my name on them. Then, you can give them to your friends and they'll be all, "I want his music NOW!"

In other news, I'll be going into new teacher mode(and Uncle Bwiley mode!) in a few weeks. Also, a couple peeps have birthdays this weekend, yes?

34 weeks pregnant + Millie graduates from obedience school!

Had my 34 week appointment today, which meant we got to have another photo shoot for Babyburger! Above is his face - Mykl thinks he may have gotten the Bernskoetter nose. I'm not worried, because I know that the Jacobs personality gene is definitely dominant. His head was down, which is good because that's how it's supposed to be when I go into labor. Hopefully he'll stay that way, but he moves around all the time so there's no telling. He weighs about 5 and a half pounds already (plus or minus one pound - ultrasound isn't entirely accurate), and should be gaining about half a pound a week. If he comes on my due date (40 weeks pregnant) and gains half a pound per week, he could be 8.5 pounds! But, 37 weeks is considered term, so he could be 7 lbs too. Just depends when he comes out - I am hoping earlier rather than later. Especially since my goal is to have as natural a birth as possible. Unfortunately, I didn't inherit Two-Mom's pain tolerance (I am a wuss), so we will have to see.

Mykl and I are also proud to announce that Millie passed her "test" and graduated from her obedience class tonight! To celebrate, they awarded all of the dogs with a bowl of ice cream, a squeaky chew toy, and an official certificate. Unfortunately, we didn't get to keep the hat. We have definitely noticed an improvement in her behavior (she was a tornado before), but there are still a few things (jumping up on people and freaking out when we have people over) that we haven't ironed out yet. Mykl is thinking about taking her to the "Intermediate" level classes this fall. Good girl Millie!

That's right, it's the ham anniversary.  This is my favorite one, because they're all meat from now on.

Also, I made it to Lawrence.  I plan to visit Springtown next weekend, so expect an unexpected fist-fight.

Kelly's New Job

That's right, I start at Garmin on the July 12th, assuming nothing goes catastrophically wrong.  Which means I'll be moving to Lawrence, KS sometime around the 6th.  The current plan is to drive down with a friend of mine and ship whatever doesn't fit in the car.  I have a sign-on bonus that covers my moving expenses, but I don't receive it until my first paycheck.  So until then, I need to borrow round $3k.  Anyone?  Eh?

Decisions, Decisions……

Since everyone else is updating us on their lives, I thought I would do so as well. As many of you have probably forgotten, I am currently the technology teacher/coordinator at St. James. Recently, I was offered the job of teaching sixth grade Math and Language Arts, and Friday I was offered the job of teaching 4th grade. Additionally, the 5th grade position might soon be opening, and I would also have that as an option! My goal has always been to teach 4th, 5th, or 6th grade; therefore, I have no clue what I am going to decide. I am leaning towards the 4th grade job because I would have my own classroom (the sixth grade position would require me to travel from classroom to classroom). However, if the 5th grade position opens, then I will definitely take it! Overall, I going towards my goals, but I need to come to a decision ASAP! Yikes!

In case you are interested. . .

Well another school year is coming to a close so I thought I would take a moment to catch everyone up on what I have been doing, whether you are interested or not.

First of all my first museum exhibit opens June 5, 2010 at the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Cemter in Wilberforce Ohio. The exhibit is called "Before it was Art: Cultural Connections to African Art" and features lots of items that people collect today but were created for actual reasons. Some things were used in religious practices, curtural practices, and just every day use. I got to reserach the musical instruments and I did a good job if I do say so myself (my instructor says so also). I only have one major unanswered question from my research: What does it mean to play an instrument open or stopped? I had to write a label for a harp-lute and I have no idea what that means (if I can get an answer soon I can update my label). Everyone is welcome to attend the opening, we are serving refreshments.

Second, I just finished creating a website! We had to use xhtml coding and a style sheet. We also had to use the collection we processed last quarter as the subject matter. Mine was Dayton: A Peace Process. You can learn all about it by going to www.wright.edu/~jacobs.39 where you can see my beautiful work. Make sure you click on all the links at the bottom. One of those links directs you to the finding aid I created last quarter. The list at the end of the document is a list of all of the folders in the collection. These are the folders I mislabeled then had to relabel by hand last quarter. In case you are wondering the re-labeling took 14 hours and I am finally starting to get feeling back in my hand.

Well better get some rest. We start installing the exhibit tomorrow so I'd better be rested and ready to go. Hopefully I will have some pictures to post soon.

I got the video of the Gen. Meade seminar up on the GenMeade Blog. Just click on my name and go down to where it list my blogs and click on GenMeade. It's only a minute long and has all the highlights. Like I said, "only mostly boring." Got to meet some interesting people, none of them hot women. There was a lady who looked like Nancy Pelosi, but since she isn't known for being a handsome women, I didn't bother to tell her that. The guy who played Gen Meade is Dr. Andy Waskie, who is also the president of the General Meade Society, which I am now a member. He was a great guy, we sat down at Gen. Pickett's and had lunch together. He told me if I ever go to Philadelphia to call him and he would give me a tour of Laurel Hill, where Meade was laid to rest in 1872.

If you watch the video you will notice an elderly gentleman in a red jacket. That is the famous tour guide and author Edwin C. Bearss. If you ever bothered to watch PBS's "Ken Burn's Civil War" then you've seen him already. The red jacket he has on is a Marine Jacket, he was in the 1rst Marines in WWII, that is Chesty Puller's unit, Chesty Puller being probably the most famous Marine in history I asked him if he ever got to meet him. He stood straight up and said "I fought right beside that son of a bitch." Probably one of the best moments in my life. All I could say was "Oorah". He told me that the HBO series the "Pacific" is about his unit, so I'll have to wait for the DVD to watch it. I get Stars, not HBO, so I got to watch "Spartacus".

JOB!!!

Everyone around here has been talking about jobs, so I googled it. The googlenet told me I didn't have one. Years later...I have a job!

I am now the Assistant Band Director to Nixa Public Schools and will be teaching 6-12th grade band!!! This is obviously very exciting for me and Dee Dee! Especially since I've been working with this program for 6 years, it will be an easy transition. I interviewed back in March, amoung 109 other applicants, and the school board voted on hiring me last week!

Basically, it will be me and two other directors team-teaching the entire band program. I'll be teaching 5-6 classes every day not including night practices for the high school band. I'll be very busy! Although, I count myself pretty darn lucky to make a career out of something that I love to do. My life is getting a little more adventurous, especially if Dee Dee and I get a house this summer!

Speaking of adventures, I also have ambitions to slowly build a professional music studio in my new unknown house. Some day, Dee Dee and I would like to have a legit side-business where I can write, arrange, and record music for commercial use (Video games, TV, commercials, radio, internet, etc...) Kelroy Sr. has already helped me get that ball rolling with having me do music for his games. Anways, that's obviously down the road -- I need to focus on having one job for now! Excitement!!! Thanks everyone for all the support (especially Mom for being more in-the-know of job openings than anyone I know). I hope to celebrate with you all some time soon!

I'm off to Gettysburg for a two day seminar on Gen. Meade. Some of my favorite authors will be giving lectures, and they'll be giving guided tours of the ground and what Meade was thinking when he put his army there. They'll also have a actor portray Meade, how they now he's giving an accurate portrayal of him I'll never know, I'll record it and put it on the GenMeade blog for anyone who wants to see it, don't all go at once. They're also going to have a wine and beer tasting event. Sucks for me since I don't drink. I'm sure there will be a lot of hot girls at the Gen. Meade seminar, these kind of things attract hot women, so I'd better come prepared. I know it sounds boring to you guys, and 99.9 percent of the rest of the world, but I'm part of that 00.1 percent that finds it only mostly boring.

Decision

So, I decided to move to Lawrence, KS sometime very soon.  Probably as soon as I can secure a job.  I have a good friend at Garmin and they hire a lot of Rollites, so I have a good chance there.  I'm starting to get bored of Seattle (and I'm moving to Kansas?), and it's not working out job-wise anyway.  Also, someone has to train Kelly Jr in martial arts.  In any case, this is a nice city and I'm going to miss it, but I'd rather be close to friends and family.

So, anyone have any ideas how to move all my crap?

Act FAST for Stroke ... starring Riley!

I had to share the latest commercial that my department at work produced. A couple of years ago, we had a lot of success creating the black-and-white Act FAST for Stroke commercial (starring Nick, Ruell and Ned the Band) that played in movie theaters. This year for stroke awareness month, we are re-releasing the commercial in a colorized version. It is followed by an "outtakes" reel that shows local performers doing their own versions of Act FAST for Stroke. The one-and-only Riley makes an awesome appearance! Thanks to my hubby for sharing his mad drumming skills. Ned the Band and Nick Sibley make another appearance, too. This commercial will be airing at Hollywood Theaters for now. Enjoy!

Babyburger Update

Oh hai! Just thought I would send a quick update about Babyburger Jacoburger. I am 23 weeks pregnant, and he has officially reached the 1 lb. mark. I, on the other hand, have gained 15 lbs. According to my pregnancy book, I am supposed to have gained between 12-15 lbs so I am right on target! Yeah homemade ice cream! Apparently I am to the point that random strangers are no longer afraid to ask me when the baby is due (No people, I'm not just fat). However, I am thankfully not to the point that strangers want to pat my belly.

We have officially cleaned out our former guest room (garage sale coming up) and have put up a crib that we got second hand at a baby sale. It was pretty cool once it was put together because I had another "aha" moment in which it really hit me that I was indeed going to have a baby pretty soon. It's not that I forgot I was pregnant, it's just a pretty big thing to let sink in. Also, a student's mom gave me some baby stuff that she was going to donate. We now have a playpen, one of those little chair thingies that babies can roll around in before they learn how to walk, and a backpack thing you put your baby in (this one you wear in the front).

Still no news on names. We haven't really been looking much to be honest - we have time! Our plan is to bring two or three names to the hospital and see which one feels right after meeting the baby. I've had a lot of interesting suggestions though. Mykl's dad suggested several trekkie names - like "Jean Luc Bernskoetter," "Ricard Picard Data Bernskoetter." I think "Star Trek Bernskoetter" might be okay - albeit a little obvious, maybe. Kelly has been calling him "Kelly Jr." Any other suggestions?

COOLEST DAY EVER

Here are some pictures from my trip to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (or Rock Hall to insiders hee hee). These are from the new Library and Archives. I'm sure when they are done they will have the biggest LP, Album, CD any music form imaginable collection ever and I got to see it at the beginning, when it was just a baby collection.

Then we got to go to the museum. A WSU alum works as a project archivist for the Rock Hall and got us a VIP tour (normally this guy gets to charge $500 for 30 minutes while his boss gets to charge $1000 for 30 minutes). We got to go into the vault and see the stuff that is not on display. This would include things like Michael Jackson's cloths from when he was in the Jackson 5, one of Bob Marley's dreds, guitars from all sorts of bands and all sorts of John Lennon stuff. Yoko Ono opened her vault of Lennon's belongings to the Rock Hall some time ago and the curators got to go in and take what ever they wanted (as a result Paul McCartney gives them nothing). The curator who gave us the tour said they had, at one point in time, the paper bag with the blood stained clothing in it from the day Lennon was shot. They have since given that back. What we got to see were the handwritten lyrics to "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and "In My Life." The latter will not be with us much longer sine he wrote it on a brown paper bag and the acid in the paper is eating the paper up (note to self, write famous song on acid free paper). Then we asked the curator what his favorite thing was and he showed us the guitar that Lennon used to compose "Give Peace a Chance." He said when he picked it up he had to buy the guitar a ticket and put it in the seat next to him. No checking this luggage.

We then had about 40 minutes to go through the museum. While this was not a lot of time, it was enough to determine that I need to go back there again. They had a Bruce Springstein exhibit on the top two floors and a reconstruction of "The Wall" on the fourth floor and "The Division Bell" sculptures on the third floor. I never made it to the second and first floors, I had to buy a t-shirt. All in all a COOOOOOL day.

Hey Hey Hey

Hey everybody, I'm Joe Jacobs, homeowner. Yeah just signed today. I started looking back in October, and I found this house in January, now its mine, well the VA's until I pay them back. Its a nice one story three bedroom two bath with a two car garage, which I'm going to put Pauly in. It's also kind of new, it was built back in 05. I'll have some pictures here pretty soon, my camera is packed and I don't remember what box its in.

It's a boy!

We learned three things about our baby at our ultrasound today:

1. It's a boy!

2. He's a show-off (See Photo 1 for proof)

3. He's super active (the ultrasound technician kept repeating "He is very active") because he was moving around so much.

Aunt Jeannine is Comin' to MO

Hey everyone . . .
Assuming I survive the next couple of school days I'm coming to Missouri for my spring break. I figure since my summer will be extremly busy with the internship, work, and one possible class I'd better come out there and say hi to everyone. Besides if I don't put some distance between my self and work during spring break I will just wind up working the whole time and that will not help me relax.

So here's my plan. This is based on my conversation with Two-Mom this last Sunday . . .

Thursday 3/18/10 - work in the AM, drive out to school and finish my archivces collection assignment.

Friday 3/19/10 - drive back out to school, make sure that my finding aid is correct and have my instructors go through the 18 boxes I have worked so hard on the last 10 weeks so that they can point out any errors. Fix any errors they have then drive back to Columbus and work until 10:00pm. These two days are where the survival comes in. After work I should take the car to Dad and have him look at before the trip:-)

Saturday 3/20/10 - run couple of errands in the morning then work until 10pm. Come home, pack, throw bags in the car then get some sleep.

Sunday 3/21/10 - Leave apartment at 7:00am, go to work and post payroll (need the $$$$$) then drive to MO!!!! Will go to Neosho that night so I can return the pictures and artifacts that Grandma lent to me this quarter. That way I do not have to worry about losing them anymore.

Monday 3/22/10 to Tuesday 3/23/10 - spend time with Springfield family. Drive back to Neosho on Tuesday evening.

Wednesday 3/24/10 - spend day with Neosho family.

Thurday 3/25/10 - meet up with Springfield group Thursday morning or afternoon (depending on their preference) for trip to Branson.

Friday 3/26/10 - spend time with Springfield family. Head to Neosho that evening.

Saturday 3/27/10 - spend time with Neosho family. Go to Mass with Grandma Saturday evening.

Sunday 3/28/10 - drive back to Ohio so I can start another fun-filled quarter of school. I have the late shift on Monday so I plan on leaving Grandma's between 10:00am and 11:00am. Will stop in Springfield for a quick goodbye.

Well I'd better get some sleep now. Will see you all in a few short days!!!
