Mine's Doing Good, How About Yours

The Potatoes really are coming up great, I had to start putting hills around them. The tomatoes are doing really well. The red onions are about a month away. The peppers, the ones on yard sticks, are behind the tomatoes, there is about two dozen growing on the chili pepper one. The owls name is Hooty, he is the guardian of Joe and Abbey's garden.

Curse, Curse, Curse

I saw this show on E! I admit that with some shame. The main one I want you to watch is the third story, it starts at the six minute mark, but the other two stories are interesting as well.

Bucket Drumming

When I was in high school I went to Chicago for some band thing. I remember one day I was walking downtown and heard this awesome drumset playing in the distance. As I leaped around the corner to check it out, I was suprised to see not a drumset player, but a dude playing a soap bucket. He had ONE 5 gallon bucket and he was making it sound like a massive drumset.

Ever since then I've been amazed by this and I've recently decided to learn how to do it. Although I'm not a bum (not a street bum at least), I think it would be fun to take a soap bucket and jam at downtown Springfield some Saturday night. Just for the fun of it all. Who knows, maybe I'll get a few bucks out of it. Anyways, here's a few videos of what I'm talking about:

Space - The Only Frontier

I now have a new job, well it's kind of like a job, except for the getting paid part (yet), and there's not a whole lot of work involved (yet). But it's something I like to do. I am now the curator of the Space Channel at Current TV and Current.com. And since I've always been fascinated by space I thought why not.

Current was started by Al Gore a few years ago, it's a news forum/social networking site that also has a TV channel dedicated to user created content which they air on TV. For instance, if you make a 5 minute documentery about a dog that uses an iPhone, and it gets on TV, then you get paid like $1000. Not a bad idea, a good way for the average person to make a name for him/her self and make some money in the process.

Jeanine might like the "2001 a Floyd Odyssey" which I posted with the intro. It's that mysterious synchronizations between Pink Floyd-Echoes and 2001 a Space Odyssey. I think some stoner figured this out about ten years ago, but it makes you wonder, and that's what "Space" is all about, the wonder of it all.

Why I Love Social Media

Social media gets a bad rap.

A lot of people dismiss it because they think its only purpose is for people to put mundane, boring information on the Internet and expect others to read it, waste time and follow up with their own useful blather. It's true, this part of social media is kind of silly. *stepping on to my soapbox now* But there are so many other possibilities! I, for one, would actually venture to call social media "Rev.ol.ution.ary."

By social media, I'm of course talking about MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc. etc., and, the biggest people-love-to-hate site, Twitter. What the heck, ignore the rest. I'll just focus on Twitter. I'm a journalist and have found Twitter to hold the most potential! I use it strictly for work (check me out at twitter.com/deedee_jacobs). I'm constantly using Twitter to send out new content from our Web site and blog. I tell our readers what stories I'm working on. They give me story ideas and news tips. They give me feedback on stories. We get dialogue happening about the news I am writing about. This is what real journalism is. It's getting people engaged in what's happening around them! Think about it. We publish a newspaper, and then people pick it up and read it, and then what happens? They put the paper down and move on. Online, they read the news, and then they go on Twitter and they TALK about the news, and they tell us what kind of news they want to read next, and they have discussions with other people that eventually lead to things HAPPENING. News + Twitter = a community that uses the news to create change.

Twitter and the rest of social media isn't just a great tool for newspapers and other media. It's a great way in general for larger entities (companies, governments, organizations, families, etc etc) to disperse information and get PEOPLE TALKING!

OK, sorry. I'm really passionate about this and had the urge to ramble about it a little! Honestly, I'm not a social media junkie. I Twitter probably 5 or so times every day at work, which takes about 15 minutes total. Once a week or so, I'll go on Facebook for a few minutes. I really don't commit a lot of time to it -- which is why it's great. It's a useful tool requiring very little commitment. But get me talking about the IDEA of social media, and I can waste a lot time doing that :)

It Was Pretty Good

Well, that was okay, of course any of you who know me know that's pretty high praise. In order to be great the girl who played Uhura would have to watch the movie with me. I won't give away too much just in case you haven't watched it yet, but pretty much all of the movies, TMBG, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager no longer matter. I don't even know if Tuvoc would still be alive. Maybe he would, cause if the movie answered one question, its how you get a black Vulcan. The one problem I had was how he could go from cadet to Captain in just a few days. Of course I'm an ex-marine so those things kind of bother me. Oh Well, I hope you enjoyed it as much our more then I did.
Congrats Kelly, that is an amazing accomplishment and I wish you all the best in what ever you will do. I wish I could have been there, and lord knows I tried, I just couldn't get the time off. I'll get out ther some day, maybe next year. Also, if you make an NHL game try and put Nash our Mason on the cover will you, and give them super skills.

Want hiking?

After hiking in Seattle, I feel like hiking again!  I know hiking around Missouri won't be the same (not a temperate rain forest), but I'm sure it will still be cathartic and fun.

I found a trail called Hercules Glades Wilderness that is part of the Mark Twain National Forest.  It's near Ava, Missouri which is about an hour and a halfish away.  There are several different trails you can go on, and it is supposed to be very beautiful.

Family Album

Everyone took lots of great photos on their own personal cameras during the Seattle trip, and I was thinking it would be cool if we could compile them in one place. I have created a Jacobs Family Flickr account. TMNT Shell-abration

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have turned 25!  Yay!  In honor of the event there are shellabrations going on across the country.  They even turned the lights on the Empire State Building to 'turtle green'.  Also, there is a new brawl game coming out later this year.  It is being made by many of the same people who worked on the last Super Smash Bros.  In addition to this they have also announced a new live action movie, due out in 2011.  For the movie it appears it will all be done with real people with cgi faces for the turtles.  I was scepticle about this at first but it seems whoever it was that did Davey Jones head in the 'Pirate's' movies is going to be doing the work for them here.  

I'm gonna go pop in my TMNT 2 arcade game for the NES.   See yous guys on the plane!
