He has a new movie out about religion. If you want to know about religion watch Monty Python's Life of Brian. It sums it up in 15 minutes. There was this guy named Jesus who lived in the First century and he told people of peace and to love your neighbor. People really liked what he said but they couldn't all agree on the details of what he said. So they all formed seperate cults based upon what they thought Jesus meant, and they've been using that as an excuse to kill each other for the last 2000 years. There's religion in a nut shell.
That's pretty much Bill Mahers' point of view on religion. 9/11 was a good example of a "Faith Based Initiative". Here in the bible belt I keep hearing about how this country was founded on christian principles. If christian principles are genocide and slavery then I don't want anything to do with it.
Actually religion goes back all the way to the time of the Neanderthals. There have been many sites dug up that have uncovered actual graves with burial offerings. Yes, people do awful things in the name of religion, but I don't think it is inherently wrong or evil, it is all those people who suddenly get this idea in their heads that they can actually understand God, and that they are the only ones who can that make things so horrible.
oh yeah, and there was no religious animosity in Japan for hundreds of years until Christians started interfering. The Japanese seemlessly merged, Shinto, Buddhism, Confusionism, all into their culture with no fighting about it.
Didn't the same thing happen to the Celtic tribes of Europe and the Native Americans of the western hemisphere? Does that mean religions stemming from the "Promised Land" (Christianity, Islam, Judaism) bring a promise of death and suffering?
